Children’s jewelry made in China and sold at Justice and Limited Too stores between November 2008 and February 2010 is being recalled because of high levels of a toxic metal.

About 137,000 of the metal necklaces, bracelets and earrings were sold for between $7 and $16 at Justice and Limited Too stores and online.

The jewelry contains high levels of cadmium, a carcinogen that research shows also can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems. Research also suggests that it can, like lead, hinder brain development in the very young.

The recall involves 19 styles of children’s metal necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

Styles and shapes of the jewelry include hearts, heart locks, butterflies, cupcakes, peace signs and crowns. Some jewelry contains the words Best, Friends or Forever and/or BFF.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the voluntary recall yesterday, saying that consumers should stop using the recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

A spokesperson at Tween Brands, owner of Justice and Limited Too stores, said that all of the jewelry styles in the recall were evaluated by an independent third-party laboratory at the time of their manufacture and distribution, “and determined to be in compliance with all applicable … requirements.”
