The Food Fight in Washington

A heated discussion over legislation in Washington would require restaurants to disclose calorie counts on their menus. The federal bill would clean up spotty state and local laws by imposing the law on all chain restaurants. Big companies like Dominos and KFC disagree with the proposal and say that too many restaurants will be left out- they want to extend the requirements to include individual eateries and small chains.

One side of the argument says the bill is inadequate with its requirements since it applies only to chains with 20 or more restaurants operating under the same name or only 25% of the 1 million restaurants nationally. The other side says that the regulations should only apply to individual restaurants that have $1 million or more in annual sales and chains with 3 or more locations because it’s more difficult for small businesses to provide accurate information and deal with government regulation.

The legislation is a result of discussions between the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the Restaurant Association in an effort to establish a national menu-labeling plan.
