The virtue of patience is being put to the test, as both businesses and individuals opt for slower deliveries to save a few bucks. Fewer overnight deliveries contributed to a 25% decline in sales at FedEx’s express unit. UPS also saw drops in revenue, as packages continue to weigh less and move slower.
To cut costs, companies are taking a look at their budgets and trimming expenses in anyway they can to avoid cutting jobs. At one media relations firm, eliminating overnight deliveries will save them $14,000 this year, as they opt for two or three day deliveries instead. UPS spokesman said he expects people to return to quick shipment options when the economy recovers.
