Nearly 80,000 state workers should see their paychecks reappear next week, after Rendell signs a spending plan into law today. His temporary plan will fall short of funding many state government programs and services- keeping only the most important programs. Lay-offs may begin this week for 300- 800 state employees.
Not only are the state employees relieved to hear that they’ll see “payless paydays” come to an end, but so are the restaurants around Harrisburg who have seen business slump 30- 40%. Uncompensated state workers have been tightening the reigns on their wallets and cutting out regular lunch and dinner outings… so in hopes of ramping up business, Zembie’s Sports Tavern is cutting state employees a break. Diners just have to show their ID badges to prove they work for the state, and give the restaurant their home address to be billed later… and for the next 30 days their lunch and dinner are on the House Account.
