In light of tough financial times, older Americans are continuing to work for longer, and younger people are opting to stay in school- resulting in a rapidly graying job market. According to Pew Research Center, Americans 55 and older who have, or were seeking a job rose to 40% this year- the highest level since 1961, while people ages 16-24 who were active in the job market decreased to 57%, down from 66% in 2000.
Among the older Americans, 54% said they were continuing to work because they wanted to and nearly 4 in 10 said they were working in part because of the recession.
Close to half of the young people said they weren’t actively searching for work because they wanted to concentrate on school or job training, reflecting an increasingly popular view that a college education is an important success factor. About 4 in 10 said despite searching for a job, they were unable to land a position.
