The hundreds of workers that were laid off from GM’s Boxwood Road plant near Newport, Delaware are now eligible to apply for a federal assistance program that offers training for other jobs. About 1,200 former workers will get the benefit, according to Dr. Ed Montgomery, the executive director of the White House Council on Automotive Communities and Workers.
Under the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, workers 50 and older who accept work at a lower wage, would receive half the difference, up to $12,000 over a two-year period- if they are making less than $55,000 a year.
Additionally, the program provides eligible workers with allowances for relocation, money for job searching, case management, job retraining and tax credit to cover health care costs. Former employees will be notified by the state, with directions on how to apply for the benefits and services.
