JetBlue and Southwest go Head-to-Head

The competition is heating up, and consumers are going to reap the benefits. For years, both Southwest and JetBlue have been notorious for cheap fares and good customer service, but they avoided tough head-to-head competition in major markets- and that’s about to change. Not only are these two airlines going to great lengths to win fliers’ loyalty, but their deals are putting further pressure on other airlines to keep up.

Previously, Southwest had aimed their efforts toward smaller less crowded airports for quicker turnarounds, but their recent move to fly out of La Guardia in New York was a game-changer. Today, they will begin service from Boston’s Logan International Airport and in September they’ll offer service between Boston and Baltimore.

We can expect to see low fares with especially steep discounts on routes where both Southwest and JetBlue compete out of Boston. Southwest’s announcement that it would fly from Boston to Baltimore for $49 was combated by JetBlue’s offer a week later- with tickets priced $10 less.
