A new House measure would extend jobless benefits for more than 300,000 whose compensation will run out by the end of this month, and another 1 million whose benefits will be exhausted by the end of this year.
The numbers are daunting- for every one job opening, there are more than six job seekers and a record 50.7% of the unemployed cannot find work within 6 months of receiving benefits, according to the National Employment Law Project.
The measure would provide an additional 13 weeks of jobless benefits for those states with unemployment rates above 8.5%, and Congress is set to review it next Wednesday.
