You’ve seen Apple’s “There’s an app for that” TV commercials. But can you participate in the apps bonanza if you don’t own an iPhone, much less any other smartphone?
You can, according to GetJar, even with the most basic handset. The San Mateo, Calif., company says it has more than 60,000 downloadable mobile applications worldwide, including the likes of Facebook Mobile, Google Maps, the Weather Channel and YouTube. This would rank GetJar second only to the 140,000-plus programs in Apple’s iTunes App Store, and ahead of dedicated app stores on phones for Android, BlackBerry, Palm, Symbian (Nokia) and Windows Mobile.
Overall, GetJar worked fine on the few handsets I tried it on. But you’ll never mistake it for Apple’s App Store, in part because the interfaces and screens on the phones themselves aren’t as slick.
