“Clunkers” Program Hurts Automotive Recyclers

There’s been a lot of talk about “Cash for Clunkers” but what exactly is being done with the old, abandoned “clunkers”? Under the program’s terms, dealers must destroy the engine with a sodium silicate solution…which in turn, is creating a huge financial blow to automotive recyclers that would normally reuse those old engines in other cars. Many auto recyclers are fearful that the incentive program could create an excess of scraps, and drive prices down.

According to the president of Automotive Recyclers Association, “the automobile is the most recycled component in the world.” Car scraps can be transformed into wine glasses, purses, wallets, brief cases, belts, lamps, countertops, and so much more. Used oil filers can either be refurbished or transformed into cans, refrigerators, or structural beams.
