Has there been anymore news or comments from Ford on this problem? I drive one of these vans everyday carrying my children. This is the perfect vehicle for our family and it’s not in the budget to buy something new right now. But this worries me everytime I get behind the wheel.
#To Tracy Davidson: I had written some time ago about the broken rear axle on my car and you had just done a story. Wished I had seen. Anyway, periodically I am in contact with NHTSA and other Ford ownes and now there has been a more serious accident. Still no word on a recall or at least a warning. Thought you might want to know.

#My wife and 2 kids were on the freeway in our 1999 Windstar, the van swerved suddenly and then flipped 3 times. The van finally came to rest upside down. The rear axle snapped about a foot away from the tire, it was a clean break. Also the axle wasn’t rusty.
People ran up to the van and kicked the window out to get everyone out, also my wife had to climb in back to get our kids out. Well when the axle snapped it went through the gas tank and leaked gas all over my kids. It was a miracle that a fire didn’t start. All I have to say is that this van is a hazard, and I’m happy that NHTSA has finally taken notice. My family survived which is only a miracle after rolling 3 times. Now I’m out of a vehicle because it of course was totaled.

Yesterday I took my 2000 Windstar into the dealer for the recall. I was told it was simple, it would only take 1/2 hour. But, it turned out it has a crack in the front axle, and they won’t give me my van back. We don’t know yet if it’s repairable or not, but, I can’t afford a new car payment on my budget. Can we force them to repair it and give the van back? For me it’s a matter of having a car, or riding a bike to work in the cold and rain!
