If you plan to travel over the weekend after the Thanksgiving and New Year’s holidays, be ready to hand over an extra $10.
The three largest U.S. carriers- Delta, American, and United, plus US Airways, all plan to add a $10 surcharge on peak travel days this winter. The extra fee will apply to a large majority of tickets for November 29 and January 2 and 3, according to Graeme Wallace of ticket-research firm FareCompare.com.
Airlines usually impose surcharges instead of changing fares when only a few dates are involved, and have previously targeted high-demand travel to events like the Super Bowl. Although the fee is unfavorable among travelers, it is a sign that airlines expect more people to travel this year.
